چکیده

Rationale Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy is neither necessary nor recommended for the support of normal, uncompromised skin grafts or flaps. However, in tissue compromised by irradiation or in other cases where there is decreased perfusion or hypoxia, HBO2 has been shown to be extremely useful in flap salvage. Hyperbaric oxygen can help maximize the viability of the compromised tissue thereby reducing the need for regrafting or repeat flap procedures. A number of studies have shown the efficacy of HBO2 on enhancement of flap and graft survival in a variety of experimental and clinical situations.

Understanding hyperbaric oxygen therapy and its use in the treatment of compromised skin grafts and flaps.

Nonhealing wounds represent a problem involving inadequate oxygenation of the tissues that can lead to hypoxic injury. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be used as an adjunctive therapy for compromised grafts and flaps that have failed to show improvement with standard wound therapy and offer additional physiologic benefits in the reversal of wound hypoxia and hypoperfusion. A literature review con...

The effect of hyperbaric oxygen on compromised grafts and flaps.

The use of grafts and flaps serves as an integral tool in the armamentarium of the reconstructive surgeon. Proper planning and surgical judgment are critical in the ultimate success of these procedures. However, there are situations when grafts and/or flaps can become compromised and require urgent intervention for salvage. These instances can include irradiated or otherwise hypoxic wound beds,...

Management of Complex Avulsion Injuries of the Dorsum of the Foot and Ankle in Pediatric Patients by Using Local Delayed Flaps and Skin Grafts

OBJECTIVE Avulsion injuries of the dorsum of the foot and ankle present difficult reconstructive problems especially in pediatric patients. Usually, there is exposure of bones, joints, tendons, or ligaments, which requires coverage by flaps. The best skin for coverage is the local skin, but the remaining intact skin is usually limited. Usage of such local skin necessitates elevation of long and...

Patterns of sensory and autonomic reinnervation of long-standing myocutaneous microvascular flaps and split-skin grafts applied to fascial beds.

BACKGROUND There is a paucity of reports in the literature examining the pattern of sensory and autonomic neural recovery of myocutaneous microvascular flaps and skin grafts to the lower limbs after a prolonged period of time. OBJECTIVES To investigate the recovery of sensation and autonomic nerve activity in long-standing split-skin grafts applied to fascial beds and in myocutaneous microvas...

An evidence-based appraisal of the use of hyperbaric oxygen on flaps and grafts.

Hyperbaric oxygen has been advocated, both as an adjunctive or primary form of treatment, for a variety of disorders, including gas gangrene, osteoradionecrosis, and carbon monoxide poisoning. It has also been used to improve ischemic wounds before skin grafting and to support ischemic flaps. In this review, we analyze the available literature that investigates the use of hyperbaric oxygen for ...
